‘I was thinking two weeks of quarantine and then things would go back to normal, but we realized pretty quickly that was not the case’

From the highest intensity to biding their time, Olympic athletes were nearing the end of a four-year cycle of qualifying and training to reach Tokyo 2020 when the coronovirus pandemic put their dreams on pause. A few of their stories:Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes were training in California in March for what would have been the opening beach volleyball tournament of their season when word came that the coronavirus had forced the cancellation of that event in Mexico.

The victory at the world championships came last summer, which qualified them for Tokyo, which means they will have gone a full two years before qualifying and competing at the Games. “We were joking the other day that we’re going to be the longest-reigning World Champs of all time,” Pavan says. But she notes that with all the uncertainty about whether, when, they might compete again, or even see each other in person, at least they don’t have to worry about the stress of Olympic qualification.

For now, then, she will continue to train. “My two brothers are my primary training partners anyway,” she says. “Slowly over the years our basement has turned into a home gym.” The brothers, both younger, provide enough of a challenge. “I used to be able to beat them up, but the youngest one is 18 now and they kind of outmuscle me,” she says. “But, no, they’re super good and I’m super grateful to have them.

The international competitive circuit that would have taken place this summer, around the Olympics, could yet begin in the fall. But as with so many competitions, those ideas are on hold for now. Yip has time to wait, and to get used to the idea of being an Olympian. “I’ve had Tokyo in mind since I crossed the finish line in Rio, but obviously it’s tough because you’re super excited for it,” he says. “I was in pretty good shape and I was coming off my best-ever running season in the fall.”
