The Canadian International Air Show has become an annual summer tradition — 73 years and counting — and so have calls to abolish it for its potential trauma-triggering effect on people with lived experience in war zones, as well as environmental damage it can instigate.
Dozens of activists are expected to take part in a protest against the air show this Sunday in downtown Toronto, carrying posters that display anti-war messages, opposition to the use of fighter jets and calls to make Canada a “zone for peace.” Other advocacy groups such as No New Fighter Jets Coalition, Independent Jewish Voices, Defund the Police Fund Our Communities and Canadian Defenders for Human Rights are expected to take part in the protest.
“They may have been victims of the types of planes that are flying above them in this show, and I think that’s relevant right now when we have so many refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine who are being resettled here,” she said.On its website, the Canadian International Air Show says it’s aware of the concerns about safety and noise, and works with regulatory bodies to comply with the rules.

As a person who had spent 8 years of her childhood in the war zone, I love the show! the first time I heard it reminded me of the war a bit BUT,it mostly reminds me that how grateful I am to be in a safe country! Every year I’m very excited to see the show and even their practice
I love the air show, For a few hours a day 1 weekend a year it’s pretty loud & disruptive. So is every festival the city has. Every single one of them is loud & disruptive for 1 weekend a year. Except Pedestrian Sunday in Kensington Market, loud & disruptive for 6 weekends a year

I'm very mixed on this topic. I get tradition and all but some traditions are not worth it. As a youth, I don't recall any urge to see the show. I do have a memory of leaving Frans on College with friends. I loud roar had me jump out of my skin - tail end of a jet.
It also scares pets and some small children, could trigger PTSD for vets or others, and there have been several accidents that I do not wish could potentially happen again.
I've been saying this for 50 yrs.
