‘Our focus is on moving the process forward as quickly as we can, while ensuring that all bidders have the time they need to put forward their best proposal’

The federal government announced Tuesday it is giving jet makers another three months to submit their proposals for replacing Canada’s aging CF-18s. Companies were to have submitted their bids at the end of March but will now have until June.

The move is to ensure the government receives high-quality bids for the estimated $19-billion contract, federal Procurement Minister Anita Anand said in a statement. Canada is planning to buy 88 new fighters to replace the CF-18s, which are now nearly 40 years old. “The government set out an aggressive timeline to implement this very complex, high-value procurement,” Anand said.

“While we understand the importance of this procurement for our women and men in uniform, our focus is on moving the process forward as quickly as we can, while ensuring that all bidders have the time they need to put forward their best proposal.”Three planes are in the running to replace the CF-18s: Lockheed Martin’s F-35, Boeing’s Super Hornet and Saab’s Gripen.Stephen Harper’s Conservative government promised in 2010 to purchase 65 F-35s before that plan was scuttled due to cost.

In the meantime, the government is spending an estimated $3.8 billion to extend the lives of the CF-18s and buy 18 secondhand jets from Australia that will fly for the Air Force until the last of the new fighters arrives in 2032.

All due respect to the minister but 10+ years for the government (any government) to buy new airplanes is not an 'aggressive timeline'. It is an embarassing timeline, a joke of a timeline, a waste of time timeline, but not aggressive.

They are trying to figure out how to bring back the Avro Aero, sourcing non carbon inducing, ethical, gender free balsa wood from somewhere in Quebec.

It’s only logical that we defer/delay military procurement beyond the usual 20 years. Should be a shakeup at the department of defence.

What happened to the old rusty jets we are buying from the Aussies? Thanks Justin

More more more Liberal incompetence —- these guys just can’t execute on running any kind of major program

I bet, each proposal being given is very juicy towards the Gov't. However given the high brass and aviators in RCAF who prefer to fly american (F-35) and probably have done some push back will most likely see the F-35 procured.

He’s not going to buy any planes

Get bombardier to build them!

You mean the already ‘selected’ company needs more time to finish their documentation in the Liberal procurement open and transparent process

Breaking news: Liberals waiting for a Bombardier/SNC combined bid that they’re currently scribbling out on a napkin!

A round of kickbacks for everyone!

Get the Gripen. Excellent multirole fighter with low maintenance cost.

From 40 yrs to 80

Justin wants to know their climate change impact, perhaps more pipelines need to be shut down to make them carbon neutral.

Why bother? Just keep leeching off the U.S. for defense it's been working since WW2!!!!

Canada not first world strike, don't require stealth just buy mix of f18 and f15s.

... Anything but non reliable F-35 and obsolete F-18 ...

Remember Stephen Harper and Julian Fantino spent 10 years and did not buy any planes?

Personlly out of the aircraft listed I think BoeingDefense Boeing’s F18 Super Hornet is the only one worthy so far. But why hasn’t LockheedMartin bid the F22 Raptor?

Justin is waiting for the first company to bribe him.

We have delayed the purchase of CF-18s for waay too long. Another delay is BS. We need new jets.

Buy the Saab gripped

What happened to the used f18 fighters the incompetent liberals purchased

After 10 years, a 3 month delay is neither here nor there, really. But it does seem like a sign that this program *still* isn't being given the priority it should have.

A new I-Phone has better tecj then those old aircraft. Liberal joke

To are proud men and woman serving the RCF don’t hold your breath this is another of JustinTrudeau from the liberal_party broken promises. cdnpoli

Really ?!!!

Canada is in a bit of a leadership crisis.

High quality kick back

This will never happen.
