MONTREAL—Canada has a role to play in helping to bring an end to the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. This would not be something new for Canada. It is part of our legacy, dating back to the great Canadian prime minister Lester B. Pearson, who secured a peace in the Second Arab-Israel War. Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. We were relevant then, and we can have a positive impact today.

That ruling, it should be noted, was supported by 16 of the 17 judges, including the Israeli Justice Aharon Barack. The second part of this step would see Canada work in our traditional capacity as a mediator of peace. Canada should take a leading role in encouraging dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian authorities, to address the underlying causes of the conflict and work towards a lasting peace settlement.
