Canada\u0027s Industry Minister said he has no problem justifying the taxpayer dollars pumped into multi\u002Dnational companies like GM, Honda and Stelantis

Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli, who is often working side by side with Champagne, said investing taxpayer dollars is a matter of saving and adding jobs. Both Ontario and the federal government put $259 million into the Ingersoll plant. Ontario also gave $513 million and the federal government $529 million to Stellantis for assembly plants in Windsor and Brampton. Honda received $131.6 million from each government for its plant in Aliston, Ont.

“They’re going to be investing $500 million a year to run that; if you take 5,000 jobs over 30 years and the investment they’re doing on R&D,” he said. “That’s some of the best investment that you can find in the market.”Article content Even with the billions the government has offered up, Canada still makes less than half the number of vehicles it did in 1999.

He said the investments the government made are part of the churn in the auto business and so far, with billions spent, the overall level of production hasn’t changed. Champagne has also met with Mercedes Benz. Both of the German firms signed a memorandum of understanding to look at sourcing critical minerals from Canada, and neither has had a significant manufacturing presence in Canada before.

Fedeli said he and Champagne are still seeking more battery plants for the province. He said in a more unstable world, it appears like a safe harbour to many firms he speaks to.
