Stephany Mayor and Alicia Cervantes scored for Mexico and Jordyn Huitema countered for Canada who lost for first time since February

“I think we weren’t good enough in the first half and you can maybe point that to a change in shape and the new personnel we had on the field,” said Canada head coach Bev Priestman. “But I think once we got back to our typical shape, you got to see what we are capable of. Overall, I’m disappointed to get a loss, but I was happy with our second half and with the want and commitment from the group to try and get a result.

Kadeisha Buchanan, Vanessa Gilles and Allysha Chapman anchored the three-player backline with Desiree Scott and Julia Grosso as holding midfielders. Canada went a goal down 19 minutes into the game after Gilles was ruled to have taken down midfielder Diana Garcia as the two were chasing down a ball played into the penalty area.

At the start of the second half, Canada brought on Sura Yekka to replace Pickett and Huitema on for Sinclair. Later Cloe Lacasse made her debut coming on for Levasseur and made an excellent first impression.Article content Mexico increased its lead in the 76th minute when Cervantes put in a rebound after Sheridan made an outstanding save on a free kick swung into the penalty area, which bounced off a couple of players and towards the net.

Deanne Rose chased a ball down played over the top by Sophie Schmidt and slid it across the net to Lacasse who was unable to hit the target. Earlier in the half, Lacasse had a great opportunity, put through by Huitema, but her shot was stopped by Gonzalez.
