The Canadian international left French club Lyon, where she spent over five seasons, to make the move to the London side. Buchanan will be the first Chelsea player to wear number 26 since former men's team captain John Terry.
"I am coming to Chelsea with the same ambition I always had — win trophies and become the best in the world. The club has everything in order for us to compete in every competition and it’s time to bring a Champions League trophy to London," Buchanan said inThe 26-year-old is already one of the most decorated players in Canadian soccer. With Lyon, Buchanan has won the French league five times, the French cup three times and lifted the Champions League trophy on five occasions.
With the national team, the centre back helped Canada win Olympic gold in Tokyo last year and Olympic bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio. Buchanan was also named Canadian player of the year in 2015, 2017 and 2020. Buchanan will be joining fellow Canadian Jessie Fleming at Chelsea in August ahead of the Women's International Champions Cup exhibition competition in the United States.
Fleming and the Blues have just finished a a successful campaign, having won both the FA Women's Super League and Women's FA Cup titles.
