Facing fifth-ranked Kiki Bertens, 🇨🇦 Bianca Andreescu showed off all aspects of her well-rounded game becoming just the fifth Canadian woman to reach a quarter-finals at the RC19. (DaveZarum)

TORONTO — Regardless of how she performed on Thursday afternoon, 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu was already set to become the highest-ranked teenager on the WTA tourFacing fifth-ranked Kiki Bertens, the rising star — already the world’s 27th ranked player after a meteoric rise — showed off all aspects of her well-rounded game and took her record to 6-0 against top-five players, becoming just the fifth Canadian woman to reach a quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup in the last 40 years with an...

She came out of the gates playing like she wanted to avoid yet another marathon match , getting out to a quick 40-0 lead in the opening game until storm clouds unleashed rain on the Aviva Centre, sending her — and everybody else — for cover. The second set was a different story altogether. Bertens responded and showed great control, running her opponent around the court. But Andreescu never relented and showed real resolve, coming back from 40-0 in back-to-back service games to tie the set at 4-4. You could tell she wanted the straight-set victory — she bounced anxiously as Bertens shots dropped — and gave herself the opportunity.

More than a few unforced errors were followed up by forehands shot out of a flamethrower, and it helped fuel a 4-1 lead in the third set.

Blame for World Cup no-shows falls on FIBA, not Canada Basketball - Sportsnet.caMuch has been said about the number of homegrown stars opting for rest instead of a Canada Basketball jersey — but this time around, the blame falls not on the players but on the organizers who put them in an unenviable position. (via donnovanbennett) donnovanbennett FIBA did this to bring some parity because the US kept destroying the rest of the world since 2008. Sorry but you cannot blame Canadian fans for criticizing those players not wanting to play when you have most international players and Kyle Lowry playing. donnovanbennett I would appreciate if they didn’t pull out on the eve. tell us it’s FIBA’s fault It looks selfish/ reflects poorly on them, imo. If they cared enough they would speak up in 1 voice. Looks like they don’t care about Canada, whether that’s true or not. Perception shapes reality donnovanbennett Thank you! Hearing how unpatriotic these players were made no sense and lacked analytical depth. This goes for your colleagues at Sportsnet as much as the casual fan making comparisons to NHL players. There are undertones in these arguments that remind me the us vs them mentality

Bright spots emerge in Canada’s win over Nigeria despite Olynyk injury scare - Sportsnet.caEven if Kelly Olynyk’s injury is relatively minor, it's fair to wonder where will his comfort level be pushing through it on a volunteer mission. The good news – based on a slim one-game sample – is Canada is not as necessarily as reliant on their NBA player pool as you might think. michaelgrange World tournaments play is different than NBA as such international based players tend to do better at these tournaments. BTW: Many countries will not have their NBA players.
