The Public Health Agency of Canada has posted guidelines aimed at helping event planners figure out whether to cancel mass gatherings of people as the federal government works to quell the potential spread of the novel coronavirus.

The next best thing to stopping the virus completely is to slow it down, public health officials have said, and try to delay widespread community transmission as long as possible to ease the burden on the health-care system. In the United States, where COVID-19 has sickened more than 800 people and killed at least 30, sports teams are playing without crowds, several concerts have been cancelled and some schools and universities are shutting down in an effort to keep the virus from spreading.

"We have been told by public health there is no need to cancel events or minimize social gatherings at this point," said Erin Benjamin, president of the Canadian Live Music Association. "I think that's going to be public health's determination, and I hope we don't get to that.

Rather, they're intended to help event planners, municipalities, provinces and territories make informed decisions. "The Institute prides itself on ensuring that our events are safe and inclusive environments, and we can no longer say with confidence that a summit held in March would be able to meet this standard for all participants," the think tank said in a statement.

As for potential school closures and limiting access to public spaces, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said that will also be up to local and provincial governments if transmission becomes widespread in their area.

tracycole25 Just more bs - like this -

When will large events be canceled in BC? Such as hockey? This is serious and seems like nobody is cleaning or doing anything, like the US. A friend just got tested and was at a gathering last weekend in Vancouver.

CTVAtlantic I was in Toronto last weekend, walking all around the city. Didn't see one person with a mask, not in the malls, not in the subway, not in the airport, and CTV finds a whole group lol.

I’ve never seen a bigger over reaction to the flu.

CTV do u think you’ve incited enough panic in people? You’ve got clowns buying toilet paper already! Now tonight after 25 mins of Virus coverage you show a story about the Plague? Which was inherently worse and actually threatened society. What were you thinking? Quit scaring ppl!

Any word on the Calgaryexpo?

FEARMONGERS

CTVAtlantic After they seeded the country well!!!!

When to cancel? Yesterday. So many other countries already did. Why are we waiting for the big number of sick

CTVAtlantic It’s just the fuckin flu !!!!!!!! Stop being snow flakes !!!

This is not leadership. This is passing the buck.

One of the recommendations is to stay 2 meters away from people... how are our youth supposed to do that in schools? They may not be at risk of major complications, but they can certainly carry it home to those who are. I fear the tough choices are going to be made too late.

Why let the private sector and municipalities make decisions that it looks like the Federal Gov doesn’t have the balls to make.

Mask really don't help, But washing your Hand's with warm water & Bacteria Soap will Absolutely do the trick, Stay out of crowd 's of People for now & Stay Calm!,

Pearl Jam.... a band.... is literally taking bigger/quicker actions than the gvt of Canada!!! No but seriously though wake up Canada! COVID19 covid19canada

This picture has nothing to do with the coronavirus or guidelines. Repost the tweet with a more appropriate picture.

Can you really stop using pictures of Asians and Chinatown? This isn't the first time CTV has done it ….

Aka communism. Let's see which events end up cancelled.
