Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc confirmed the possibility during an interview with CTV Question Period Host Evan Solomon, airing Sunday.
Leblanc's comments come as WestJet announced on Wednesday its decision to suspend flights to four cities in Atlantic Canada and to "dramatically" pare down service to Halifax and St. John's, N.L. Air Canada had also said in June that it would suspend service to 30 regional routes, which mainly impacted travellers in the Maritimes, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
And make sure you get the money to them so CEO and executives don’t miss their bonuses
If that happens, I would expect to see a reduction in airfares & a return of customer service at check-ins, increased accessibility without delay for the physically challenged by airports and airlines.
Maybe start with not allowing Air Canada to but Air Transit while they seek a bailout and use wage subsidy. I understand the air industry challenges but purchasing another airline while you seek assistance from tax payers is ridiculous!!!!
then we wonder why not one politician from any political party will help the over 467 victims of PROVEN SYSTEMIC HARASSMENT at the Canadian human rights tribunal for laws that already exist..24 external investigations 2010 to 2012.since our pensions are retained ILLEGALY
Wow, Liberals arent ruling out turning Canada into even more of a communist state. Shocker.
There is NO CANADA ANYMORE!!!!! Not as long as Trudeau and his criminal syndicate hold power!!!!!!!
Pages out of Castro & Chavez policies. Nationalize private enterprise, Drive our investments, replace the heads of Police, Defence, stack the courts, control the media, shut down all opposition. Reward Family & Friends.
Of course not, look how much Bombardier has stolen over the years. Thugs, gangsters!!! Oligarchs?
Lol
Next; take back the oil companies. We are arranging and paying to get their product to market, cleaning up their abandoned wells and giving them our oil for 1% Royalties. We may as well own them.
Russia own Aeroflot, do they not? Yep. This is where we're going folks. We're doomed. Welcome to the new Canadian communist manifesto. There's no turning back once we go down this path.
So, Monsieur LeBlanc is in position to help his relatives again? 'Dominic LeBlanc broke conflict of interest rules by approving lucrative surf clam licence set to go to wife’s cousin.'
The Airlines should be suing the Canadian government for the damages they have done! This is sheer madness. He is going to pay for the damage he caused, and not only will you thank him for it, you will give him a financial kickback for doing it!
And who the hell is going to pay for this... with all the damn handouts and taxes... you might want to consider the fact “ you can’t blood from a stone”. Quite frankly I am sick and tired of corporate bailouts. Either they run a successful business or they don’t.
Here we go, another Air Canada bailout.
Liberal Gov't isn't ruling out taking over ALL Canadian businesses!
The aim of socialist/marxists is for the government to own and control everything.
call it Canada Post Air on Bombardier planes engineered by SNC Lavlin for the WE charity syndicat.
Wow, In the old days you had to make it or break it
Yeah I’m sure we want our tax money buying airlines and while your at it there are thousands of small businesses that could use the federal government investing or buying part of their business to keep them afloat or are we all no equal big and small in Canada
Where is your condemnation of this sickening terrorist attack? Why no comment? Are you SUPPORTING THIS EVIL TERRORISM WITH YOUR SILENCE?!?!?!
Skippy is buying $1 Billion hotels for hosting newcomers for free Now he is buying airlines with collapsing pensions He will be using airlines to bring newcomers for free to meet Migration Compact goals Nobody can stop him
Big Big Big Government where citizens become more and more dependent ...
Correction Canada has only one publicly owned airline. So sad for capitalism
Better yet, why don’t they just turn this country into a Socialist state? Oh wait.....
Why not... it worked for GM and Chrysler... They made out like bandits
Nope
So in other words another Gov't bail out industry... goes along with CBC, Bombardier and now airlines... what about oil and gas or farmers...
This sounds like China. The government already owns enough.
Who else wants a piece of Canadian tax payers money? Casinos, China, Africa, airlines...140 unpublished companies that we gave 1 billion to that apparently we don’t have a right to know. How about seniors, clean water for the north, PPE for nurses, food banks. Come on 🇨🇦
Don't own the company, own the planes. Offer to buy airplanes and sign them back in leaseback agreement. If the airline goes busy you have the assets to sell or establish government transport until new player enters.
barf
Socialism to the extreme by Trudeau.
Omg. Don’t let JT have his mitts on airlines.
What a surprise.
Communism is here... We can't let them win
Why not leave it for some investors to pick up on the cheap....essentially the same thing with the exception it is not tax payer money
Smells like communism to me
« Taking a stake in airlines »= Nationalizing losses, but keeping profits private! Corruption NoMoreBailouts CorporateWelfare
No decisions, who's surprised?
communism
Rapid Testing to allow relaxing the quarantine regulations for international as well as Maritime travel in my opinion would go a lot further. Owning portions of companies that have no ability to turn profits is not in anyone’s best interest.
This is absurd!
Sounds like something a Liberal would do, yes, what only a Liberal would do !!!!!!!!!! You can't fix stupid.
I'm seeing a future where only the very wealthy will be able to fly.
NO, NO and NO!! 😡😡
Hey why don't they just open up our airspace to competition from US carriers? Sink or swim without taxpayer money
...so taxpayers. Will they be getting free flights for their donation?
althiaraj What a load of Trudeau garbage talk. TrudeauCorruption
Another way for taxpayers to lose money.
Once upon ago...it took 30 years to cross across the country having to eat your relatives in a snowdrift just to survive. Today you watch a movie take a dump and you’ve arrived. Invest in horse drawn wagons you low resolution thinking minions. 😁
althiaraj If the government doesn't do something there wont be any airlines or an air navigation infrastructure left if ever people feel safe to fly again. The industry cant survive with traffic reduced by 90 percent, and before the pandemic the industry was strong and profitable.
No thanks. Airlines should ask their shareholders for cash, not taxpayers.
Oh. My. God. liberal_party is going to bankrupt our grandchildren.
Stay to hell out you can’t even run a united country.
Another runaway... Strap in.
God no.
As a taxpayer that would be a hard NO It’s time to open up the economy and stop spending money with no plan to open
First, socialism...
With what money? We’re broke
Just more buyouts like they're doing in every other industry. Paying off the rich with poor people money.
Of course they are. 🙄
Marc Garneau said airlines would go bankrupt if they were forced to refund customers. They kept Canadians' money for flights not taken & now they want even more of our money? I guess we know who is on the bottom of the list & it seems it's us.
What is taking a stake in the airliner going to do if they still can't fly and be operational? We could also test them rapidly using antigen test, that have been validated, in-field tested and work on the spot in 15mins?DLeBlancNB PattyHajdu JustinTrudeau
No. The government should not be involved in business.
Kinda like the pipeline. How is that working out now?
One step closer to socialism
Why would we want to have a piece of an airline? Possibly one of the worst investments right now and again why do we want an airline.
Did this work the first time around? Or with Bombardier?
Lol makes sense
Which means they will do it... nothing makes a private company more profitable than getting tax 💰 involved... 🙄
A VERY BAD use of taxpayers money..... this government needs to consult the citizens via a referendum before taking such decisions. Airlines have been greedy and exploited the flying public when the going was good. they need to dip into those reserves instead of asking for doles
So our Government sells off our natural resources, 407, and hydro but thinks private industry like airlines are a good investment for tax dollars?
Nationalize major infrastructure like pipelines, buy up industries like airlines, assume control of programs that are provincial authority like daycare & pharmacare. Sounds like centralization to me. Who could have predicted a bunch of Marxists would move to centralize authority?
But a stake won't get people moving around again, so what's the point? Wait until we get back to some normalcy and support the smaller airports that carriers have abandoned.
Cause that really worked out for the taxpayers with the auto industry
SeamusORegan VOCMOpenline So they won’t take a stake in Husky’s offshore oil project to save 1000’s of jobs and actually get a return on the investment but they’ll invest in Airlines that burns loads of fossil fuels, makes sense i guess.
Bad idea. If they truly wanted to invest, they should have bought Air Canada at $9.
Air Canada u mean as it's based in Montreal
Sounds Like another Government Bailout, veiled in an investment ploy. I’d like to know how much AC & Associates have donated to “The Trudeau Foundation” Air Canada is right up there with The CBC, Bombardier, Irving & SNC when it comes to Laundering Tax-funds
Rob_Plante So wait a second here the airlines spend money paying millions in bonuses over the years when they should have been saving for a rainy day and now it’s the taxpayers who have to pay again Guys this is getting out of hand now and does anyone even care Anyone at all 🤷♂️😡
Not Gov't's job to own a stake in anything. Gov't needs to get out of the way and let private enterprise flourish.
No WAY! I don’t want my taxes going to a fossil fuel burning entity. Let them sink
There are approximately 40 705 Air Carriers in Canada- about 70 Regional air service providers and about 700 on demand charter and air taxi.
