Improving diversity in GR space requires acknowledging change is possible, say Liberal MP, lobbyistsAn important hurdle in promoting diversity in the field of government relations is overcoming intimidation and realizing that change can be achieved, according to GR professionals. The Government Relations Institute of Canada (GRIC) hosted a panel discussion on Nov. 25 in Ottawa which explored the weaknesses in politics and the GR space when it comes to diversity, and the possible solutions. The event followed the publication of the results of an Abacus Data survey on Sept. 22, which found that GR professionals in Canada identify as overwhelmingly white (82 per cent), straight (80 per cent), and do not live with disabilities (94 per cent). “I think there’s a desire to change, but it’s almost like it’s so daunting that people are like, ‘Well, let’s just inch this forward,” said Bunmi Adeoye, the senior vice-president of Proof Strategies and a panellist during the GRIC event. “When we talk about … diversity in GR, well, if you don’t have the people in these spaces that actually understand what those problems are, it’s hard to change anything systemically. I think there’s a desire there, but are people willing to put themselves on the line, whatever their background is, to actually make that change?” The panel included Liberal MP Greg Fergus (Hull-Aylmer, Que.), the parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.); Lisa Kirbie, the founder and CEO of Blackbird Strategies, and Tiéoulé Traoré, the head of government and regulatory affairs for IBM Canada. Will Shelling, a senior consultant with Counsel Public Affairs, told The Hill Times that the GRIC panel and the survey results have started a long overdue discussion when it comes to diversity in GR.
