The 36-year-old Cambridge resident missed the time standard earlier this month in Chula Vista, Calif., to qualify for the paracanoe world championship. Brown competed at the 2022 and 2023 worlds in Dartmouth and Germany, respectively.“It was very disappointing. It took a few days to mentally get over the disappointment,” he said. “ this is the best time to have that speed bump.”

“When I corrected it, I had to spend more strokes correcting it than I should,” he said. “When I didn’t have to correct, the boat was moving really well. The second I had to correct it and steer, I was losing a lot of speed.”Brown said he was hitting the needed time while training in Florida before the California competition. He is still relatively new to the sport, having made the transition from wheelchair racing in 2021.

Brown spoke during a telephone interview from Texas on his way back to Florida. He was planning on training there for a couple of weeks before heading home towards the end of the month.Brown’s next race is May 11, which will be a distance regatta. His next sprint regatta will occur in early June in Nova Scotia. He will head to Montreal at the end of June for an event where the national team trials and Olympic and Paralympic qualifiers will take place.
