It was Jan. 10, 1977, and though much has changed in the world since then, Smith has remained a constant at The Paint Shop, recently celebrating his ongoing 46-year career with well wishes from customers and colleagues, family and friends, and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey, who urged him to, “Keep on making our world more colourful.”

Smith was a 21-year-old with a high school diploma and a few years experience in retail and paint when an acquaintance told him “the new crowd” that had opened The Paint Shop on Campbell Avenue in St. John’s two years earlier was expanding and looking for staff for a new Topsail Road location. Smith applied, despite his employer trying to convince him the new place would probably not last, and accepted a full-time position.

“Some will come in and say, ‘I need to speak to one of the girls,’” he explains with a chuckle. “I say, 'Well, the girls are busy right now, what do you need?'” “I always used to bring them up on New Year’s Eve when they were small and get them to put away the colour chips and brushes,” Smith recalls. “We’d get Mary Brown’s and I’d give them $10 each as their pay for the day.”Smith — who is grandpa to Christina, Kathryn, Theo and Dani — spends much of his free time with his family and volunteering in the community, with the Salvation Army, Scouts, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Mount Pearl men’s slo-pitch league.
