Calgary's film community concerned over sale of Globe Cinema

With Calgary’s Globe Cinema up for sale, and Eau Claire’s cineplex closing, Calgary’s film community is concerned over a lack of movie theatres downtown.Calgary's Globe Cinema is for sale. The art-house theatre is one of the last remaining movie theatres in Calgary's inner city. Calgary's film community is disappointed over the potential loss of another downtown movie theatre with the Globe Cinema up for sale.

Calgary's Globe Cinema has two auditoriums, each seating almost 400 people. Calgary's film festival organizers say losing the space downtown would be detrimental for their events. The Calgary Underground Film Festival is exclusively held at the Globe, and had its most recent run at the theatre in April. One of CUFF's lead programmers, Cameron Macgowan, says he's known the venue has been up for lease in the past.City committee looks at designating Plaza Theatre as municipal heritage resource

"It's the architecture and the staff and the celebration of art that goes on in that building that adds so much to our festivals," he said.
