A review by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team determined the man, identified in its report as AP, was arrested without incident and given a routine medical check before being placed in a cell at the arrest processing unit.
“In this case, it is clear that the only physical contact by police on was in the process of arresting him,” the report states. The ASIRT report said officers’ body-worn cameras showed he was co-operative and no force was used during his arrest. The cell camera showed the man eating a sandwich given to him upon entering the cell. He was then seen about a minute later putting something into his mouth before flushing an unknown object in the toilet.
