Calgary Liberal MP George Chahal is seeking support from his colleagues and is planning on travelling across the country to build a ‘coalition of support’ to stop the deportation of Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the driver of the semi-truck involved in the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus crash in Saskatchewan in 2018 that took the lives of 16 people and injured 13 others.

Sidhu, who emigrated to Canada from India in 2014, received eight-year sentence after the 2018 accident in which he drove the truck through a stop sign and hit the Broncos’ team bus that was on its way to Nipawin, Sask., for a playoff hockey game. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, and was granted parole last year. Last week, an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing issued a verdict to deport Sidhu to India.
