“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said head coach Brooke VanTassell while photos of the winning players were being taken. “The kids did such a hell of a job all weekend; they came to play every game. We didn’t come into this tournament as the favourites in anybody’s eyes except our own … we knew what we had coming in.”
Lead-off hitter Gavin Harrison started the decisive fifth-inning rally with a single which was followed by Rylan Sutherland’s single. Harrison scored on Broden VanTassell's fielder’s choice put-out and Sutherland came home when Will Singer’s deep flyball to the centre-right field gap was misplayed by the Thunder outfield. Singer eventually raced home on a wild pitch.
“You just try to zone it out and stay focused,” he said. “We got the outs and the win … we did it,” he said, the jubilation coming out in his tone. His batterymate was Singer who, along with scoring the important fifth run, picked up a pair of singles and provided constant energy for his teammates during the hot afternoon and intense game.As for the win, he said it’s made more special by the fact they did it in front of their home crowd, and it avenges a performance last year when they didn’t have as much success.
