The South American Football Confederation said on Monday it would move next month’s Copa America to Brazil

Brazilian players raise the trophy after winning the Copa America, at Maracana Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro, on July 7, 2019.The South American Football Confederation said on Monday it would move next month’s Copa America to Brazil, after original host nation Argentina pulled out at the last minute due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The decision means the oldest international tournament in the world will kick off as planned on June 13, with the final on July 10. “The 2021 Copa America will be played in Brazil!” CONMEBOL said in a statement. “The start and finish dates are confirmed. The host cities and the matches will be revealed by CONMEBOL in the coming hours.”The announcement comes less than 24 hours after Argentina said its COVID-19 outbreak meant it could not longer host and despite the fact that Brazil is still fighting its own battle with the coronavirus.

More than 450,000 people have died from COVID-19 in Brazil. Brazil has routinely reported the continent’s highest case numbers and deaths, and ranks second highest in the world for both daily reported cases and deaths at present. This year’s Copa America was to be the first featuring joint hosts, but Colombia was removed as co-host on May 20 after a wave of protests demanding social and economic change spread across the country.Organizers had been reluctant to call the tournament off because of its importance financially. The last Copa America, held in Brazil in 2019, brought in $118-million in revenue.Follow topics and authors relevant to your reading interests.feed daily, and never miss an article.

Brazil is the covid epicenter of America. It reveals that authorities - of football and politics - dont't respect lives nor deaths. Brazil has almost 500,000 deaths. No ICU beds. Bolsonaro seeks mega events to deflect attention of midia and regain his low approval rating.

in Brazil the pandemic is also increasing. 🤷‍♂️

In post-pandemic Europe, migrants will face digital fortressThe EU has poured 3 billion euros (US$3.7 billion) into security tech research following the refugee crisis in 2015-16, when more than 1 million people fled to EU countries. 'It was scary': Doctors warn of increase in children presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis during pandemicSome months into the pandemic, doctors like Elizabeth Sellers noticed a worrisome trend — more children arriving in hospital with a sudden and severe condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. That does it! TimHortons No sugar in ALL your donuts from now on. THINK you can handle it?!! I am surprised there is no reference to ruling out covid given so many other studies have referenced the correlation between covid and causing an increase in diabetes. Poor baby. I’m so glad she’s ok. Neonatal diabetes is rare, this made me cry just reading it.
