Water samples from Whitson Lake and Helen Bay on Lake Huron have tested positive for toxic blue-green algae, Public Health Sudbury & Districts warns.
“As it is a public bathing beach, Kalmo Beach on Whitson Lake will continue to have signage posted by Public Health Sudbury & Districts,” the health unit said. “The signs advise the public to avoid swimming and to not allow pets into the water if the algal bloom is present at the beach.” “The highest concentrations of toxins are usually found in blooms and scum on the shoreline,” the information states. “These dense accumulations pose the greatest potential risks to people and pets. The algae toxins can irritate a person’s skin and, if ingested, cause diarrhea and vomiting. If a person ingests high levels of toxin, they could suffer liver and nervous system damage.”
