BLAST FROM THE PAST: Redblacks celebrate Legacy Night, but beating Stamps most important

That was 2016, so long ago in football years. The thrilling 39-33 overtime win over the Calgary Stampeders, which broke a 40-year Grey Cup drought in Ottawa, will be celebrated Friday night as the Redblacks host the Stampeders. Many of the heroes — Kanneh’s former teammates SirVincent Rogers, Ettore Lattanzio, Patrick Lavoie, Chris Milo, Moton Hopkins, Jonathan Rose and Nolan MacMillan — will return to Ottawa for what’s being called Legacy Night.

“I think about those times,” said Kanneh. “Then there are other times where I feel like we need to make new memories. So that’s what I’m really focused on now. It’s one day at a time, one practice at a time, one game at a time, trying to lead this team to another victory. If we keep using that formula, you never know, maybe when November comes, we’ll be making new history.”

“Pretty good is not going to cut it in professional sports,” said receiver Nate Behar. “You can’t mess up at critical times. We have to keep it clean and keep it moving. Trying not to be too cliche — we’ve been in every single one — but to maybe get closer to the answers to know what it takes mentality to close it out. We did a lot of the good things successful teams do. We finished with the ball in our hands, we had a big sack on a drive to win. That was stuff that had been missing.

While the Stampeders have lost back-to-back games to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, they’ve still got a 4-2 record. They come into the game hurting. Several key players — including running back Ka’Deem Carey, centre Sean McEwen and defensive back Tre Robertson — are out with injuries. Head coach Dave Dickenson didn’t travel with the team Thursday, but the Stamps are hoping he’s OK to take a flight into Ottawa Friday.
