2021 census language data came out today: - Bilingualism is rising in Quebec, declining in the rest of Canada - 4.6M Canadians don't speak English or French regularly - 189K people speak an Indigenous language, most commonly Cree languages or Inuktitut

This graphic shows the rates of bilingualism across Canada, according to the 2021 census.

Statistics Canada released 2021 census data on Wednesday that indicates bilingualism is rising in Quebec and declining in the rest of Canada, while immigration has boosted to 4.6 million the number of Canadians who speak neither English nor French regularly. During the period between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, the percentage of Quebecers who were bilingual rose to 46.4 per cent from 44.5 per cent, while the proportion of bilinguals outside Quebec declined to 9.5 per cent from 9.8 per cent.

“This is due to faster growth in the number of people who can conduct a conversation only in English or neither English nor French,” Statistics Canada reports.
