Ben Simmons' on-court impact was, in the end, just another what-if in Brooklyn. But his prolonged absence was about more than a basketball team, it underscored the flaws in social media discourse — especially when it comes to mental health. (ThomasKetko)

. “You know, when things are going good, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m going to play in Game 4.’ Now that [the Nets] lost, ‘My back hurts.’ Well, if your back hurts, get some Icy Hot. I’ll send it to you.”

Perhaps the most calcified comment came months ago, though, shortly after the trade saga with Philadelphia ended, when Simmons had the audacity to crack a smile while at the Nets practice facility with his new teammates. Because, while none of us are alone in the work of our mental health, we are all still individuals. There is only one Ben Simmons, one person who is the exact sum of all he’s dealt with, is dealing with, and will one day navigate. Our own experiences and curiosities don’t entitle us to specifics about his hardships, either.“They should be happy I'm smiling, honestly," Simmons said during his introductory Nets press conference.

“It was just piled up — a bunch of things that have gone on over the years, to where I just knew I wasn't myself, and I needed to get back into that place of being myself and being happy as a person and taking care of my well-being,” Simmons said. “That was the major thing for me. It wasn't about the basketball, it wasn't the money, anything like that. I want to be who I am and get back to playing basketball and being myself.

ThomasKetko Articles like this get written because it's automatically assumed Simmons is telling the truth since it's mental health. I have real empathy for real mental health issues, but not cases when it's so transparent he's lying to protect his money.

ThomasKetko Sorry, but Simmons did huge damage to the mental health cause by faking it in order to not play and get $. I hope Philly wins case so precedence isn't set. Simmons uses mental health as a shield so you can't criticize his move to get paid since it's bad to criticize MH issues.
