Seventh selection in 2018 NHL draft leaves University of Michigan to start NHL career

The Vancouver defenceman had an obvious curiosity level about prized prospect Quinn Hughes, who left the University of Michigan to sign a three-year, $2.775 million U.S. entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. He’s another under-sized blueliner thriving in a game where skill is supplanting size and that resonates with Stecher.

Hughes, the seventh selection in the 2018 NHL draft, saw his collegiate season end Saturday when the Wolverines were swept by the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Big Ten best-of-three quarterfinal series. The 19-year-old Orlando, Fla. native suffered a bruised foot in the opener Friday, but played Saturday and will arrive in Vancouver on Tuesday.

“The advice I would give him is just be yourself and don’t worry what people think,” added Stecher. “Play your game. That’s what I tried to do coming out of college. As time progresses, you learn what works and what doesn’t and you adapt your game that way. “Quinn is an exceptional skater, strong on the puck and plays with creativity and vision,” said Canucks general manager Jim Benning.

Hughes will burn the first year of his entry-level deal when he plays his first game. And he can only play 10 games the remainder of this season so he doesn’t have to be protected for the Seattle expansion draft in 2021. If he exceeds 10 games, he would be a third-year player by 2021 and need to be included on the protected list.
