Beloved veterinarian takes her own life, leaving West Quebec equine community shocked, saddened ottnews ottawa

Veterinarian Andrea Kelly does a check up of a miniature horse. Kelly died on July 31, 2022 at the age of 36.

But she had the guidance and support of veterinarian Andrea Kelly, who, through Facetime, walked Fournier through the successful delivery of healthy twin foals.Essie, a 10-year-old Arabian, and her foals, Blaze and Star. "It was so surreal. You don't expect these things …. You always think 'what could we have done differently as a community to prevent this? and what can we do differently we don't lose another vet like this?'" said Ingebrigtsen, who knew another veterinarian who died by suicide.

The community sharing their stories with Kelly's family "really helped us through this difficult time." In the years that followed, Alarie and Kelly lived in a home in Kemptville and built a life together with their horses, cats and dog. Erin Kelly says her sister always put the clients first and was not "one to leave the animals without care," even when it may have affected her.

Andrea Kelly developed a love for horses and set her sights on becoming a veterinarian early in life. Clients say she was gifted when it came to dealing with the large animals.Following Kelly's passing, her family asked for donations to be sent to, a non-profit organization based in the U.S. that aims to advance wellness, mental health and the reduction of suicide among veterinary professionals.

"We take that very seriously," said Marie Archambault, vice-dean for academic and student affairs at Université de Montréal faculty of veterinary medicine in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que.. Equine and large animal vets are particularly susceptible, says Aja Harvey, Furlong's colleague and an equine veterinarian specialising in internal medicine.

This is so sad. She was loved. She was beautiful. She was smart. She cared about animals. From the outside looking in it seemed like a wonderful life. How did this happen? It's too late to help her now. R.I.P.

Heavy heart.

Andrea euthanized my beloved boy on May 10. Now she too is gone. I trusted her prognosis b/c I knew she wouldn’t recommend the death of a patient unless it really was the only humane choice. I regret that in my grief I wasn’t ready yet to reach out & tell her it was ok.🧵 1/2

Very sad..a person who takes care of animals seems like such a fulfilling life..guess u never know..
