Danielle Smith, Alberta premier, marks one year as Alberta leader saying she will be bold but boring and has learned from her mistakes

How do you feel when the press, the opposition, the deep thinkers, the political junkies, the social media keyboard warriors are just waiting for something wild to happen? When will she go on a spacewalk into politically treacherous territory?“I want to be bold but I don’t want to be ideological. I want to put forward bold ideas. You need to be bold and you need to show leadership and you need to tell people there’s a problem and you want to solve it.

“I’m not afraid to make a strong argument. I don’t win every argument but I’m going to give it my best effort to be bold and make strong arguments and bring people on our side.” The premier says it had to be made clear Alberta would flex its muscle within a united Canada and within the Constitution. “The hits keep coming from the federal government. We’re going to keep fighting Ottawa on some of their ludicrous policies that are unconstitutional and where they have no idea what they’re doing.”“They should take us seriously,” warns Smith. The premier also says the overhaul in health care will continue with more decisions to be made closer to the front lines rather than in the higher reaches of Alberta Health Services paper shufflers.

As an aside, Smith recalls a “pleasant and cordial” telephone call with Wab Kinew, the NDP leader elected to be premier of Manitoba, talking about, among other things, whether there would be an opportunity to build transmission lines so hydro from Manitoba could come Alberta’s way.
