Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced on Saturday that a planned increase to the excise tax on alcohol will be scrapped, with the increase capped for two years.·A planned hike to the excise tax on alcohol is being scrapped by the federal government, with the increase capped at two per cent until 2026. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says the federal government will cap the annual alcohol excise tax increase on beer, spirits and wine at two per cent for an additional two years.

"Our government really recognizes the value, particularly of small businesses ... and we also recognize the affordability challenges, so that's why we've taken this decision." Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the government's plan to raise alcohol taxes, along with the carbon tax, on April 1.
