The recent Truro Pride Parade was not only an amazing event to participate in for Big Brothers Big Sisters Colchester staff, but it was an important step in the organization’s commitment to foster equity, diversity and inclusion. CONTRIBUTEDBig Brothers Big Sisters Colchester has been making ‘big’ steps towards equity, diversity and inclusion for the children and volunteers we serve.
One person joined us mid-parade, parting the crowded audience, walking up to us with a grin and a rainbow flag as a cape. As we reached the end of the parade, everyone dispersed and the remaining staff members stood with our cups full. Walking back to our vehicles, we were chattering and sharing our own personal take on the experience we had. We still talk about the happiness we felt on that day. Happiness for us, our children and youth, our volunteers and community.
In July, Stephanie was selected to join a national Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada equity, diversity and inclusion committee alongside nine other employees of BBBS. Our Colchester location has the only representation east of Quebec; other members are in Ontario and west, including interim president and CEO of BBBS Canada, Jennifer Arp, who is spearheading this movement.
Our agency is incredibly proud to be a part of allowing people to be who they are, especially children. Our kids and community need us to be leaders in equity, diversity and inclusion so the girl with the rainbow eyeshadow feels heard. So the non-binary child isn’t scared to introduce their pronouns. So racial minorities do not feel “other.”
