Bay Ferries says as of Aug. 1, it had sold tickets for 28,538 passengers who have or will travel on The Cat ferry during the 2022 season. The company is projecting annual traffic in the range of 37,000 to 44,000 passengers for the 2022 season.

The Cat ferry sails into Yarmouth harbour on the evening of Aug. 4 after a daily return trip between Nova Scotia and Maine. TINA COMEAU PHOTOon - Tina ComeauYARMOUTH, NS – Bay Ferries says that as of Aug. 1, it had sold tickets for 28,538 passengers who have or will travel on The Cat ferry during the 2022 season.

That projection is only slightly off from what the company had been estimating as of the first part of July, when it projected season ticket sales of between 39,000 to 46,000. Bay Ferries says after The Cat service was relaunched in 2016, there had been successive growth in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. There has been no official study done on the economic impact of the ferry service, but data from a Tourism Nova Scotia 2017 season exit survey pointed to spending of around $2,400 to $2,600 per tourism party that had traveled on The Cat. If you multiplied a $2,500 figure by 15,000 tourism parties, as one example, that would be $37.5 million being spent in the region’s economy.

“We are still projecting that 2022 final numbers will fall between the 2016 and 2018 season totals, even with the three-year service hiatus,” Bay Ferries stated in its Aug. 4 media release. “However, we continue to be cautious due to ever-changing external conditions.”• Encumbrances, or perceived encumbrances, of international cross-border travel .

On that day, Bay Ferries CEO and president Mark MacDonald acknowledged the ferry industry is not an easy business. If it was, he said, everyone would be doing it.
