21-year-old Akinola was born in Detroit and raised in Brampton. Last year, Akinola switched his international soccer allegiance from the U.S. to Canada. However, Akinola’s 2021 season was cut short in July when he ruptured his ACL in a match with the U.S. Akinola underwent surgery and is expected back early this season.

Akinola, who played for the TFC Academy as a teenager, was out of contract at the end of the 2021 season but reportedly wanted to remain in Toronto for a variety of reasons, not least his excitement about the club’s rebuild, which includes the signing of Italy international Lorenzo Insigne.
