A quick scan through the list of 33 recruits shows only four players under six-feet tall with three tipping the scales at more than 300 pounds.“That’s what we tried to do – we tried to get bigger,” head coach Jeff Cummins said during a March 28 interview. It went from expecting 20 of 24 starters to return from the 2019 squad to four returnees being on the turf when the next season occurred in 2021.
Acadia had four players sustain season-ending injuries on the offensive line last season and few, if any, teams have the depth to be able to manage a line that depleted. They have done that with about a third of the incoming class being offensive linemen.Cummins said the new players will help but how quickly they will be able to contribute remains to be seen as there’s always an adjustment to the university game.
“Committing to Acadia means getting the opportunity to further pursue my academic and athletic goals at the next level, while being close to home,” Michalos said in a news release. Linebackers coach Rob Suffron sees Cousineau as a foundational player who can contribute immediately.Kaysar Monteiro and Alex Whalen are a pair of defensive backs to keep an eye on.
“He really wants to be good,” Cummins said. “He continues to call me, email me, text me about getting more information and more playbooks. … He’s going to push right away.”For the Axemen to improve, they will need returning players to take the next step in their progression.
