A Canadian Snowbirds pilot has been formally charged with sexual assault for an incident alleged to have occurred in Barrie.
Maj. Steven Hurlbut, a lead solo pilot with the famed aerial acrobatics flying squad, is facing one count of sexual assault, following a Canadian Forces National Investigation Service investigation. Hurlbut is a Calgary native and military veteran who joined the famed 431 Squadron in 2021. He started out his career as an air navigator and worked as a lecturer at Kingston’s Royal Military College for several years before trasferring to the military pilot trade.
He has flown the CF-18 fighter jets in Iraq and Syria, completing 36 combat missions. In 2016, he was posted to the fighter training squadron at Alberta’s CFB Cold Lake. The investigation was launched last Wednesday. The Royal Canadian Air Force commanders in Winnipeg and Moose Jaw, Sask., announced Saturday that a member of the demonstration squadron had been put on administrative duties and that the Snowbirds would be flying as an eight-plane formation rather than with a full complement of nine Tudor jets, “for the forseeable future.The Snowbirds were in Barrie for an aerial exhibition on the weekend of Jan. 10 and 11 before travelling last weekend to Moncton.
