ASIRT clears Calgary officers in two incidents yyc

On Sept. 24, 2018, two officers who were on patrol encountered a man in a stolen truck. The officers followed the truck while awaiting backup, according to an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team document. The truck parked in a driveway, so both officers exited their police vehicle and announced themselves as “Calgary police.”Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

The driver backed up again, hit the police vehicle, drove onto the neighbour’s yards and collided with a garage. In that time, the other officer fired five gunshots and hit one of the vehicle’s tires. The stolen vehicle continued to drive erratically and was later found with a flat tire. The driver was arrested with superficial lacerations from a police dog that had been deployed to find him.Article content“The subject officer’s use of force was proportionate, necessary and reasonable,” said ASIRT. “As a result, there are no reasonable grounds to believe that a criminal offence was committed.”
