As shutdowns occur across the country, are Canada’s grocery stores able to cope? GlobeBusiness

JONATHAN HAYWARD/The Canadian Press

In a statement to The Globe and Mail, one major grocery retailer reiterated this. “We do not feel that there is a cause for concern as there is a significant supply of essential items," said Anthony Longo, president of Longo’s. “The food supply chain remains intact and has been ramping up accordingly to meet new demand.”And at a press conference Monday, Health Minister Patty Hajdu urged Canadians against buying more than what they need for a two-week period.

And while such systems result in lower prices and reduced amounts of food waste, it also means they are less resilient to major spikes in demand. Not long after, Jim Mackie, owner of Jim’s Independent Grocers in Vanderhoof, B.C., said he started seeing a dramatic uptick in shopping at his store – about a 40 per cent increase in sales this past week compared with the same period last year. He said he has been having difficulty keeping certain items, such as pasta and toilet paper, in stock. “It’s hard to keep up,” he said. “People are panic buying.”At the family-owned Nature’s Fare Markets – also in B.C.

globebusiness You think people panic buy now? Honestly thank the big grocery chains for providing some sort of “normalcy” in these times. The goods are there and being provided. The daily hoarding from those that go everyday strain the supply. No supply chain, then then real panic starts.

globebusiness Yes, stop with the fear mongering!!

globebusiness Misinforming=crime. loblawco is an example of what measures they’re taking & reassuring consumers. And those going on about “it’s all about making $$$”, just stop & think for a minute. These are essentials, not some “fashion/beauty brand” telling you to restock on makeup/shoes!

globebusiness 'If you got it, a truck brought it.'

globebusiness Cope with what? Massive revenue increases because they won't put limits on volume/panic buying? How sad for them.

globebusiness Politicians are saying they can cope. Must be true. 😂 COVID19

globebusiness Stop posting click bait like this and maybe it will. Media is partly responsible for this craze and panic and the more it’s crammed down our throats the more the sheep will continue to prove humanity sucks.
