Three restaurants — Richmond Station, Ten and Burdock Brewery — have publicly signed onto doing away with the practice, with the aims of making the industry more equitable and providing service workers with access to the social safety nets afforded to other professions

This translation has been automatically generated and has not been verified for accuracy. As the Canadian economy continues to adapt to the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, some restaurants in Toronto are saying goodbye to a service industry staple: tipping.

Unlike the practice of “tip-pooling,” which typically pays back-of-house staff such as cooks and dishwashers significantly less than front-of-house staff, a hospitality included fee is designed to be more evenly distributed. “That social safety net is so important, and for people in this industry, it’s just not there for them.”

Kavoosi, who said she has previously worked at a restaurant without tipping, sees the practice as an effective tool in incentivizing engagement between customers and servers.“When there’s no difference in how much I’m being paid with one customer to the next, it becomes a less personal experience.” “A lot of servers unfortunately won’t give certain people equal service” if tipping is axed, she said.

“I think the biggest problem is sticker shock,” he said. “Just seeing the price of your burger go up 20 per cent – people are going to react to that.”

I tip for take out. Won’t make me poor and won’t make them wealthy but we all come out richer.

In Europe, Australia and elsewhere it's not even regarded as a tip or a gratuity. It's salary.....overhead like rent, food, plates, electricity....all-in prices like the majority of the economy.

Any restaurant including this on my bill immediately loses my business My gratuity goes to who I choose when I choose It is not something low life owners unwilling to pay livable wages are going to demand I pay

A mandatory 15% tip for take out? For what exactly? Bringing out a bag and taking payment? Think I'd have to say no to that.

“The reality is that for a really significant portion of our staff, their earnings aren’t insured,”...an employee’s tips do not contribute to either employment insurance or... [CPP] “That social safety net is so important, and for people in this industry, it’s just not there..”

Service levels will go down, I'm sure.

StopUsingTaglineForTweets All servers under-declare a large portion of their tip earnings, so this trend would seriously hurt the pocket if it becomes universal. Someone should tell JOEYRestaurants. The tipping point? As restaurants pivot to a 'hospitality-included' model, the debate over gratuities continuesStudies have shown that the prospect of a gratuity can be wielded by diners to bullying, predatory or prejudiced effect, and several high\u002Dprofile restaurants, identified tips as an ongoing problem for staff If your job is to bring food from one point to another and take an order, don't expect a 6-figure salary. Anyone can do this job. When restaurants realize just how receptive people are to this model, most will move quickly to adopt it. Consumers will just factor this in to the cost of dining, be glad that workers are being better compensated, and if a business is well managed service levels won't falter. An 18% surcharge is an automatic tip! And usually charged on included tax I may ad. I don’t have the answer but all industries and all sectors want to pay their staff more. I’m in manufacturing, how bout an 18% “fee” on your bill! Doesn’t make sense
