Are psychedelics the next big bumper crop? One Toronto firm is betting on it via TheGrowthOp

Field Trip Ventures is tackling Canada’s ‘broken’ mental healthcare system by building the world’s first legal research centre at the University of West Indies in Jamaica to study the mushrooms that produce the mind-altering chemicals.

The 3,000 square-foot lab will allow the company to study the effects psychedelics, such as psilocybin, ketamine and MDMA, on anxiety and depression — with the help of research staff from the university. Jamaica is one of the few countries where the drugs are legal, and with public attitudes softening towards cannabis, researchers hope their focus on mental health applications will allow psychedelics to follow a similar path toward legalization.

“One of the goals is to build a library of psychoactive fungi and developing scalable commercialization options,” Jafferi said. “We know of a few alkaloids based in these mushrooms but there’s a lot we don’t know yet.”
