I have been a small cog in the grinding wheels of news reporting off and on for many years now. I have not been a raging fire of change, nor have I been a wimpy slinger of words.
When I was much younger, news seemed very exciting with a certain amount of power and reputation attached to it. One could go anywhere, ask anyone questions, expect answers, and get your name on the front page of the paper. There is a certain amount of ego involved – I’ll be honest. My first job at a newspaper was at The 4th Estate in Halifax in the late 1960s and early ’70s. I didn’t write a thing. I watched in admiration a small group of people cover stories that weren’t being covered in the mainstream media. I saw the opinion pieces that were thoughtful and scathing at the same time. I also saw “the Old Women of Argyle Street” being called out regularly. Yes, you probably know that I’m talking about The Chronicle Herald and The Mail Star.
If you would like to know how long and how important newspapers are in this province alone, I suggest you go to the website of the Nova Scotia Archives’ collection of newspapers. These vital publications start in 1769 and go up to 2002. They give you almost 250 years of this province’s history.
