ANDY WALKER: Hiring process needs to change

During the last election campaign, Premier Dennis King indicated major changes were needed to the inner workings of the health-care system.

That is as it should be. While they have a mandate to carry out the policies of the party in power, they also provide continuity and professionalism to the task of delivering service to Islanders. Like those in any job, they face growing demands to adapt to technology that is constantly changing. Cutbacks in the workforce often mean they have to do more with less - a reoccurring theme in both public and private sectors.

There is a lot of talk about"HR action" and"position management" forms , but apparently, there's no digital method for those three agencies to keep easy track of how the process is unfolding. MacFarlane also tabled a comparable hiring chart for Nova Scotia, where all of the hiring is done by the Health Authority of Nova Scotia. It has seven steps.

That is not the workforce of 2024. Now, there is a labour shortage in many areas, meaning prospective employees often have a choice between several jobs. If you have a convoluted hiring process, the chances are now good that by the time you have made a decision to extend a job offer, the person is working somewhere else.
