Elections are defining moments for a nation: in deciding what it stands for, it also decides who and what it is. In the present election the issue on which we are being asked, most directly, to decide where we stand is Quebec’s Bill 21: the provincial law banning public servants “in positions of authority” from wearing religious symbols on the job.
Existing workers may have been grandfathered, but only so long as they remain in their current jobs. Should they ever move, or seek a promotion, they will face the same restrictions. The signal to the province’s religious and, let’s say it, racial minorities, vulnerable as they will be feeling already after the mounting public vitriol to which they have been exposed in the name of the endless “reasonable accommodation” debate, is unmistakable: you are not wanted here.
So shame does not come easily to us as a nation. We have so hollowed out our national conscience over the years that we think nothing now of selling out a persecuted minority, rather than take a stand in their defence. And the proof of that can be seen in the positions of our national party leaders.
Boomers including Coyne fear securalism but the parties all have data showing youth favour it, strongly.
Rubbish, 'selling out a persecuted minority' doesn't exist. 41-66% Canadians (somewhat/totally) and 64% Quebecers approving of 'secularism' .. the sky is falling.
Our shame?
Except they haven't really. The saner ones are waiting for the provincial court challenge to run its course. I haven't read any capitulations, just caution and the desire NOT to let the media stoke this into a full-fledged dumpster fire.
acoyne Don't blame federal leaders, Canadians are the stupid one's, never questioned Charter rights or freedoms before, why should Canadians care about their rights of freedoms now, a majority of Canadians never read the Charter anyways
acoyne I think your lament overlooks that Quebec is a relatively coherent nation, culture & society. The ROC is not! The incoherent product of diverse economic migrations, ROC politics & politicians can only cohere around the most basic policies of individual economic self-interest. 🤔
kinsellawarren This saddens me.
Good for them, so long as they are clear on there position and defend it - let the provinces decide these matters. It would be something else entirely if the Quebec public was clearly against Bill 21 - but they are not.
acoyne Or, instead of everything you wrote, sensible people think it's for the courts to decide.
kinsellawarren The rest of Canada sees this, but yet when a candidate calls Trudeau out on the fact he panders to Quebec, and suddenly she’s a racist? Pretty sure everyone knows EVERY party panders to Quebec . Too bad we didn’t get the electoral reform we were promised...
It would be interesting to see how the vote and federal election might turn were one of the major parties to come out strong against Bill 21, would the rest of Canada reward that one party with additional support for standing up to Quebec. I wonder.
Could have just fucking let them separate when we had the chance...
acoyne A better way to express is tha they all prostituted themselves.
I think it's a combination of politicians caring about nothing more than votes along with the fact it's Quebec which is not at the top of mind to most Canadians mixed with the fact that the term racist has been so bastardized by ideological idiots incapable of adult conversations
Great article. Thank you for writing this. I have found it disgusting and incredibly disappointing that not one of our leaders will scream out against b21. This should be all over the news!
As many ill informed as spewing about bill 21, racist towards what or whom? Many people have a problem understanding the separation of state and church.
The Montreal media is talking about separation because of bill 21. Canadians are saying good riddance JustinTrudeau We do want to belong to Quebec. I vote for Canada! What about you?
