Census data fails to show a threat to the dominance of the French language in the province

On May 14, a few thousand Québec anglophones held a demonstration in Montreal to protest measures contained in Bill 96, measures that will radically diminish the public services available in their language and curtail the development of English colleges.

Let us be clear here. The situation of Québec’s anglophones is considerably better than that of the French-speaking minorities in the rest of Canada.

Again, it is important to inject some perspective in this discussion. Although the rights of Québec’s Anglos are indeed limited by Bill 96, comparing the legislation to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia or the Québec government’s language officials to the Gestapo, as some of the English community’s prominent voices have done, is not only wildly exaggerated; it serves to confirm the nationalists’ claim that English-speakers suffer from “a persecution complex.” .

Without resorting to hyperbole, there are good reasons to challenge the need for Bill 96’s bureaucratic assault on the speaking of English in Québec. One of those reasons is that this attack is based on a false premise. Yes, because French is the language of a small minority on the continent, it needs protection and promotion. But is French currently set to disappear, as many assert, quoting anecdotal evidence and sloppy media reporting?Article content

Quebec’s Bill 96 and all the other language acts are fascist, discriminatory, undemocratic and deny the English Speaking Minority equal opportunities to live their lives.

What many people do not realize is that freedom of speech is of central importance in innovations in all aspects of life and Bill96 and all the language acts,by their rank discrimination against the use of English in Quebec will and have suppressed creative processes.

Is it the same National Post where in 1995 Diane Francis called for the deportation of Québécois into 'bantoustans' 'to protect the St-Lawrence Seaway?'

Dear André, your memory is definitely failing or you’re an anglo propagandist. In the late 1940s was living in a town where my dad couldn’t get a decent living because he didn’t talked English. BTW the same happened to me in the mid-1960s. Now you know why I had to learn English.

nacroix qu’en pensez-vous?

So who is making a devisive statement? It's the right!! Trying to force a wedge, us vs them is all this paper pushs.

NO government in Canada should be able to dictate what language is used during a citizen's private medical appointments.

Les anglos c'est une gagne de braillard.

Quebec bill 96 is the result of discrimination, ignorance, Not asking people for their rights

Be nice if Canada would maybe help protect Anglo rights in a Canadian province.

Anglos & immigrants.

Typical of the National socialists re: nazis, running Canadas provinces.

In the eyes of many Québec nationalists, the Anglophone community is represented by a bunch of aloof, unilingual, wealthy white Rhodesians who are indifferent to the survival of French. They are therefore the enemy and nothing is going to change that.
