It was Courtney Scharf’s first date using Hinge, a popular dating app designed to find true love. She headed to Cocktail Bar on Dundas Street West in January 2019 to meet Timothy Sukhu, a University Health Network project manager. They chatted for hours. Scharf, a chief client officer and innovation keynote speaker at Trend Hunter, immediately felt at ease with Sukhu.
Scharf felt it was too soon to meet his friends. So, Sukhu abandoned his hosting duties for a couple of hours and took Scharf out. Touchdown! She would never go on another Hinge date again. When organizing their August 2022 wedding at Archeo in the Distillery District, Scharf and Sukhu weren’t interested in an elegant affair. They wanted a fun, nostalgic party. To promote the vibe, all guests were invited to wear their most comfortable sneakers, or better yet, their favourite Crocs . To the couple’s delight, some guests arrived in matching rainbow pairs of the polarizing footwear.
After the officiant pronounced the couple husband and wife, they performed a special handshake, which was the coordinator’s cue to inflate the creature hidden under a sheet behind the bridesmaids. “I’ll never forget the look on my mom’s face,” Scharf says. The twist? Her mom said it was one of her favourite parts of the wedding.
“It was very much about having people feel playful,” Scharf adds. “It’s just so hilarious how almost kindergartener-ish people are when you give them a wig, you give them a silly hat.”
