Walkers, runners and rollers are taking to downtown Toronto’s streets for the Sporting Life 10K run on Sunday, which is expected to raise almost $2 million for kids with cancer in its 23rd year.
16,000 participants are set to run, walk and stroll at the event, which started at 7:30 a.m. on Yonge Street at Davisville Avenue and finishes at Lakeshore Boulevard near Exhibition Place and Ontario Place. The run raises money for Campfire Circle, a charity that provides outdoor, indoor and even in-hospital camp experiences for kids with cancer or other serious illness.
Gianina Gaitana, whose son Carter underwent treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia, told the Star that the camp experiences“He’s been to all the programs. He’s a different kid when he’s at camp. He can be shy and quiet but when he’s at camp he comes into his own,” she said.were made to accommodate runners and seemed to cause delays for some commuters this morning.
On Twitter, a physician said hospital staff were “negotiating” with Toronto police to drive across a closed road.for the event, the transit agency said.
