Coal is the last remaining alumnus of the Parliament Hill cat sanctuary that was dismantled in December 2012 and January 2013, its numbers by then reduced through diligent family planning from the dozens that once freely roamed the grounds — many perhaps chased by the ghost of King’s Irish Terrier, Pat — to just seven.
“Coal is in excellent health now,” says Danny Taurozzi, who shares his Gloucester home with Coal, as well as another cat, Valérie. “He recuperated quickly, and was very happy to come home.” But banished they were, at least on a nightly basis, owing to their increasing numbers. Still, they were allowed in each day until 1955, when they were replaced by pest-control chemicals.Well-meaning groundskeepers and charwomen, meanwhile, occasionally fed the unemployed and now-outdoor cats, until 1970, when volunteer Irène Desormeaux took up the daily mantle of their care.
In the 2015 federal election campaign, posters urging voters to cast their ballots for Coal appeared in Centretown . “He ran on a platform of social justice and humanitarian causes, but Coal did say he was open to a Coal-ition government.”
