The coronavirus outbreak that began in China is affecting the production of hockey sticks used by the world’s top players, raising concerns about a potential shortage. Two major manufacturers, Bauer and CCM, have factories in China that have closed.“We’ll see how long it lasts,” Eichel said. “Hopefully not too long. Obviously, I go through sticks pretty quickly.”
CCM said in a statement government approvals could slow the reopening of factories and expects to have a better picture of capacity and deliveries in coming weeks. Bauer CEO Ed Kinnaly said the situation remains fluid and hopes the company can re-start operations in China soon. “I do have good sales guys and we came up with a plan to stock up ahead of Chinese New Year, but then the virus hit and there has been an even longer gap without producing sticks,” Boyer said. “Am I concerned? Yes, but I’m not panicking.”
American Hockey League teams have not been affected by the shortage, and the league office remains in contact with CCM. The National Women’s Hockey League has also not seen an impact because it gets sticks from Warrior, which makes them six days a week in Mexico.
Guess they'll have to use the ole' wooden stick!
Wow we can’t make hockey sticks in Canada?wtf
Buy the sticks and wipe them down.
The day is not over...
I heard that Pakistan is good with sticks...
This can't be serious
Perfect. Back to the wooden sticks that don’t break every 2 shifts.
Stop opening factories in China! Open up your factories back home! Canada has lots of lumber and Canadians who need jobs. Canada HockeyFactories CanadianJobs
There is so much wrong with this statement.
What runs out first...sticks or fans?
Reason why they break easily. Made in china
Well that’s a problem from China 🇨🇳
Buy them in canada like ya should
WalMart sports department ?
Gee. Guess Gallagher may soon regret smashing his stick after OT with Dallas tonight.
They can borrow my KOHO or SHERWOOD 😜
Should ban them anyway way too many injuries they don’t make the players any better only their shots and injuries, time to figure it out
What a completely insensitive heading to an article. Shame on for this
2 words.. Sher-Wood 5030SC🏒 birch
I love that a picture of a broken stick was used for this headline. Honestly, the quality of sticks might improve if made somewhere else.
Would be a shame if they had to go back to wood. notreally Still good enough for Al MacInnes
They should be made in canada but what do I know
Might have to put the 'stick' back into hockey stick.
This explains why they break so much China built maybe try Canadian built sticks
Good old sherwood hockey stick should do the job
God... the coronavirus might have a very serious impact on Canadians after all!
Serves you right for over charging for sticks
Made in China. So I always wondered how come the sticks broke so easily. Make them in Canada and perhaps less will break.
Sherwood like a good stick these days .
Make them use wood ones
Hespler Hockey Sticks
Well now !!!! Why pawn it off to China !! And have the US & Canada markets make them !
This should be lessons learned by these companies. It doesn't always pay to ship all of our work over seas. Support MadeInNorthAmericaMatters
Something is definitely wrong when a popular Canadian sport relies on China for its gear. It can't be that damn hard, figure it out!
Why are they not made in Canada? I am sure they say cost but really.
Play with a cheaper stick and suck it up
Maybe they should quit buying them in China
I would think the NHL teams are all well stocked for this season
Perfect opportunity to start building em here.
They've got plenty of shitty sticks at Canadian Tire. Suck it up like the rest of us.
If these boys would use manly sticks like the old days they would last longer and be better for the environment
Who cares?
So the price of sticks are going to skyrocket more so than they already are.
You guys are idiots for writing this article.
The NHL should go back to the wood sticks only. Just like baseball with the wooden bats. Somethings that have changed under Bettman haven’t been for the best. I would love to see just Wood sticks allowed.
I've got a garage full of old wooden sticks if the NHL want to work a deal.
Yeah people sick and dying who gives a shit about hockey stick shortages
Titan TPM 2020’s baby!!!
harpsama Make Lumber Great Again! 🏒
I heard that some have even been so bad that there's a hole in the blade
Break out the sherwood 5030s I got a couple to donate
Back to good old fashioned timber.. best ever
🚨 Integralhockey to the rescue!!!!🚨
This truly is not a concern. These companies can choose to do this is North America
You mean we may see wooden sticks. Something that may not break. Players won't pull long shifts anymore. Too much work if your stick is 3 or 4 times as heavy.
Save your money and go back to the wood sticks!!!!!
The fact that they are made in China is an absolute joke!!!!!!!!
Hmmmm Let's see, back in the day wood was used. We got lots of wood in North America. How about wood again? Just an idea.
I had to check the date and make sure it wasn't April 1st
Time we shift back to wood.
Bring back the wooden sticks haha
Worldwide pandemic. People dying. WHO WILL MAKE OUR HOCKEY STICKS?!?!?
Ya well boo hoo. I have some wood sticks on my garage I will sell them for 280 a pop
Poor professional hockey players. Maybe they'll have to use one stick for an entire game, or not only keep 2 out of a bundle of 20.... oh the humanity
Wow, First world problems
Sherwood stock about to rise
BuyCanadian
Don’t see this saga ending anytime soon maybe 6month to a yr should be an a nteresting playoffs lmao
Ummm maybe we shouldn’t have everything produced over there just because it’s cheap labour.
Ffs really made in China no wonder the world is gone to the shits just like everything else people want cheaply made stuff well I mean cheap labour made things wtf millions makin more millions guess this is what we call business ohh well these boys will have to suck it up
You got to be kidding!! Make them here in Canada FFS!!
People like thought those sticks were produced in North America because they were so expensive!!! SMH 🤦♂️
They are professionals, I am sure they can play with anything....
You mean that they will have to use a North American company for the NHL? What a concept. Now, who makes their sticks in Canada or the USA? Reebok Warrior CCMHockey BauerHockey
Ok now it’s getting out of hand! The Govt will have to intervene and set up production of these hi tech sticks on this side of the pond.
70k infected and thousands dead. Strong possibility of global pandemic that could infect 40 - 70% of the world according to WHO, and you send this .... I’m sure the sick or scared to death Chinese are beside themselves about the hockey sticks
Maybe they could use wood to make hockey sticks?😏
Sherwood and Victoriaville hockey sticks were the best wood sticks ever made. Lasted forever and were made in Canada
Anyone else manufacture hockey sticks, other than China!?
Bring back wood Torspo sticks and be done with it!
Time to put PamaHockey in everyone’s hands.
Let them use wood again.
Maybe we should look at where the billionaire league is getting sticks. It would be awesome to me if they had to use regular sticks like us. All of a sudden, not everyone can shoot lol.
Back to the old trusty Sherwood PMP 5030!
Bring back the wood stick.
Is this a serious article ? A thousand deaths, but now we're talking about the issue of a shortage of hockey sticks. ComeOn
The flu has killed 14,000 people this year but I will choose to be outraged over this particular virus.
Amarques13_
Back wood hockey 🏒 😂
Seriously? That’s what we should be concerned about?
Slow news day
Could just use good old Canadian lumber
Those sticks are horrible. Would love to see a return to wood or something that doesn't break when you blow on it. Imagine if golf clubs kept exploding. ..they'd be gone fast.
Is the point of the article to make us feel sorry or pity for the multi million dollar athletes that we pay for so that they might have to buy their own sticks now, or use normal sticks that' dont cost 350 dollars like the rest of us?
Who care about the damn sticks...
There's a bunch of sticks at my local Canadian Tire. I'll pick them up a few!
Wonder where they would find trees? 🇨🇦
Hahahahaha awww.
bal4_rednirus Lol - I’ve got some of my son’s sticks in the garage I’ll sell you for $5k a piece 😂 Original price was $300 so you’re getting a deal in a time of shortage.
Now I know why those sticks break so easily.
Oh no... Not hockey sticks! This has gone too far!
What no canadian producers
Maybe start making them in Canada? It's hilarious how they make sticks that they charge $100+ for are actually made in China. They should cost freaking pennies since the labour costs are non existent compared to NA.
Not a problem! Not news 🖕🏽
Considering the sticks cost $379 to the public, why don’t they manufacture the fucking things in Canada.
Such an easy 'problem' to fix, hardly worth mentioning given what this virus is REALLY doing to the world.
Why the fuck don't we make these in Canada?
Deserve it for the cheap labour alone. Bring the manufacturing back home.
Just an idea, how about making some in Canada? 🤷🏻♂️
Really! Wow! What will they do?
Hundreds of people are dying and hockey sticks are the thing to worry about? What is this article?
So people are very ill and the hockey world is more concerned about stick shortages
Let’s get back to basics Sherwood 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I’m sure they’ll figure something out for their precious hockey sticks
LOL we cant even make a hockey stick here in Canada ..
Bring back the Sherwood Featherlites
Maybe they can start producing them in North America?
HAHAHAHA! I wanna see a bunch of guys using mid-range sticks they bought at sportchek in the playoffs.
Concerns Hockey sticks are a concern? How about the death of people
I see wood sticks making a comeback! Sherwood, get prepared
I've got a couple of Sherwood PMP 5030's that I'm no longer using if anyone is interested. One Coffey and one Bondra
Good hopefully the price goes up
