Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said he intends to speak to the University of Alberta’s administration about the need to curb scientific research that could undermine Canada’s national interest

“I am deeply concerned about the potential theft of Canadian intellectual property and further concerned that research partnerships with the People’s Republic of China may be used by Chinese military and intelligence agencies,” he told The Globe. “More needs to be done to curb foreign state infiltration in our research and innovation centres, including our postsecondary institutions.”

I will be speaking with the University of Alberta and my other government colleagues to determine next steps. My priority is to work with our post-secondary institutions to protect Canadian intellectual property and to ensure that Alberta institutions do not enter into agreements with entities that would undermine our country’s core national interests.

He said the university is looking forward to guidelines that Ottawa is drawing up on national security considerations for the evaluation and funding of research partnerships.“To be a leading research-intensive university means being an active participant in the globalized community,” Mr. Dixon said. Canadian university project funding from China, including the U of A’s collaboration, dominated hearing of the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations on Monday evening.

“I am still however not entirely comfortable with upending the long tradition of academic freedom and university autonomy without a strong rationale. Government intrusion into key Canadian institutions, such as universities, must be carefully calibrated and justified,” he said. “We are not in a cold war with China, at least not yet,” he said.

Has conservative government of Alberta done anything right?

globepolitics China considers research ties property of the state, like the Canadian Iive Ebola(spikey balls, coronavirus research) liberated by chinese nationals from Canada's most secure lab repatriated to Wuhan Institute. Like India considers business as assets.

Aaaaooooo

Priorities Alberta!

research ties are the last thing to curb. You have to look at the projects, not at their color, and decide. To be prejudiced is not acceptable.

Not sure where on the list of 'Important Things the Alberta Government Should Work On' but I would think that they need to shunt everything else to a lower degree so they can deal with COVID effectively. If such a thing is possible with Kenney and his people in charge.

CCP planned incursions into other countries shipping lanes or air space is to monetarily weaken other countries. Can someone explain Chinese Govt. that bullying your free and independent nation (Taiwan in this case) “is not an internal matter” but is an international issue and a big concern for the world leader..
