Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s recent renewed push for an Alberta Pension Plan that would see the province leave the Canada Pension Plan Fund is part of a broader conflict with Ottawa that traditionally flares up when the federal Liberals are in government, say experts, but is also part of keeping the anti-Ottawa, populist base of her United Conservative Party on her side.

Bratt pointed to the original 'firewall' letter addressed to then-premier Ralph Klein in 2001 and signed by a number of prominent conservatives including Stephen Harper, Tom Flanagan, and Ken Boessenkool.
