Airport delays prove COVID-19 measures need adapting as travel ramps up: council

The situation is particularly bad at Canada’s largest airport, Toronto Pearson International, where passengers on 120 flights were held in their planes Sunday waiting for their turn to get in line for customs.Airports are simply not designed for customs to be such a lengthy process, she said, and the space is not available to accommodate people. The airport is also not the right place for COVID-19 tests, she said, especially since tests are rarely required in the community.

The government is aware of the frustrating lineups at airports, a statement from the transport minister’s office said, and is working on reducing delays in time for the busy summer travel season.Story continues below advertisement The ministry is working with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority to post more screening officers at checkpoints, the minister’s office said, and the agency is working on hiring even more.Read more:Between May 1 and May 7, about 1.3 per cent of 1,920 travellers tested at airports were COVID-19 positive.

Public health measures have scaled up and down over the course of the pandemic as waves of the virus have come and gone. Right now, they are the least restrictive they have been in months, with vaccinated travellers tested only on a random basis.

No more masks at the airport!

This is a world wide problem

Travelled through Pearson last week. Going through customs was fine.

Ummmmm.....hire more staff?

That would involve the govt admitting they have been wrong and that can’t possibly be true!

I don't think it's the COVID measures. That's not what I saw at Pearson. I saw lack of CATSA and CBA staff, and disorganization.

Drop all COVID mandates for travel and get staffing where it needs to be. The rest of the world has done this so no more excuses here PMJT!

Open more security clearance lanes ,there's no issue of delay ,when two lanes will be open for thousands traveller's. What do you think?

Big Deal!! What is wrong with People, Money & Power? We are still in the Pandemic! Watch once again for sick and dead people in Fall & Winter! Watch!!!!! It's Reckless behaviour!

Airports and airlines were pathetic and bumbling before the pandemic. Do we forget so easily? All this virus did was expose the reality of their ineptitude.

It’s so cute that TorontoPearson is blaming everyone. I took a domestic flight and the security line at Pearson was 2+ hourss long. Total chaos in the domestic terminal. They blame everyone else but they are simply not ready for more travellers.

The plandemic is over. Done with this shut

Unless your still stupid Remember everytime a ndp-liberal was asked a simple question they cant answer with commonsense always.. Like 'travelers are out of practise travelling' thats your transport minister answer...

I understand the Libs will set up a committee to decide how to best fix the long lineups at airports. You can’t make this stuff up. Potential solutions s/b in place for the Xmas travel rush.

The money the government is spending on airport random testing is appalling. They could pay down a chunk of the deficit with the amount they are spending. But alas, it’s boosted our national employment rate ... on the tax payers backs.

Trudeau has never stopped embarrassing himself. And his total allegiance to covid theatre is just another one for the history books. 🎬

Easy solution, stop being the only country on the planet not allowing unvaccinated people to leave the country

They don't have a clue what so ever 🤦🏻‍♂️ Very happy I don't have the urge to go anywhere. Been there done that !

So does a death and funeral!

Hear me out, and I know I’m not a CEO of airplanes or a drama teacher, but would ending the useless ‘rona shit improve things? Just spitballing.

The shitshow continues

Airport delays and the scientific evidence prove COVID-19 measures need to be removed. fixed your headline for ya.

Well our clueless PM still wears a mask all over Canada but not overseas for some strange reason. I guess it’s because of some science things I don’t understand.
