The six chiefs of the Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick say this week's coroner's inquest into the police killing of Chantel Moore demonstrates the urgent need for an Indigenous-led inquiry into systemic racism.

They say the findings and recommendations of the coroner's jury don't address the serious nature of the tragedy or the systemic issues embedded in the justice system.

Moore, a 26-year-old Indigenous woman, was fatally shot by police in Edmundston, N.B., in June 2020 during a wellness check after she advanced toward an officer with a knife. In a statement, Chief Ross Perley of the Tobique First Nation says the inquest has not lessened the need for an inquiry into systemic racism.

Chief Allan Polchies of the St. Mary's First Nation says an inquiry would provide more accountability for Moore's death. New Brunswick's systemic racism commissioner, Manju Varma, is currently conducting a review into institutional racism in the province and is expected to release her report in September.

Ummm charged towards the cop with a knife.

Systemic racism does not exist.

Yeah, police keep attention on me while I walk if their around past them and I have been assaulted by all the functionaries positions that have arrested me.

This is a tragic event that could have been prevented by her. Don’t advance on anyone with a knife in hand. It is her actions that the officer reacted to …not her ethnicity. The chiefs trying to make it a racism motivated event is shameful.

“Women fatally shot as she advances toward officer with a knife”(Is a better headline) PS..I’m also indigenous and feel that I or anyone else should expect unfavourable treatment if our actions were threatening another person’s life!

95% of murdered indigenous women are killed by indigenous men.

Jewelanland Not all Canadian Human Rights Tribunals recognize systemic racism as part of provincial HumanRights law. Ontario, yes, Alberta , no. JustinTrudeau needs to address this disparity as litigation & racism are digital. LawAndOrder AntiBlackHateCrimeBill NativeTwitter cdnpoli

Would likely have shot anybody coming at him with a knife. I'm afraid indigenous people will never take any responsibility for their own actions.

she look more Caucasian then indigenous..... Iv notice a trend where real indigenous look people are ignored and white looking possibly Metis get attention .....

Assailant walking forward with a knife drawn threatening a police officer conducting a wellness check who was only trying to help is a victim of reverse systemic racism both at the time of the incident and afterwards with everyone claiming foul. How about a review of systematic reliance on the Canadian taxpayer?

Chantel Moore shot by N.B. police officer in chest, abdomen and leg, inquest hears | Globalnews.caChantel Moore, a 26-year-old Indigenous woman, was killed by a police officer in Edmundston, N.B., on June 4, 2020, during a wellness check. A novel new service. In the future requesting person needs to pay for and send taxi drivers to do health checks. No uniform, no gun, no authority. Face time to confirm and show attendance made in real time. Taxis available almost everywhere 24/7/365. Trustworthy and available. If i woke up at 2:30am to find a man on my balcony, banging on the glass, & shining a flashlight on himself like a serial killer in a horror film, my fight or flight response would kick in too. If you want to kill someone or severely traumatize them, request a wellness check.

Inquest into police killing of Chantel Moore shows urgent need for inquiry into systemic racism, chiefs sayThe six chiefs of the Wolastoqey Nation say the findings and recommendations of the coroner’s jury don’t address the serious nature of the tragedy or the systemic issues embedded in the justice system Ok I had a friend, white male, shot by police for advancing on them unarmed. He was a big guy in a foul mood, and I respect their right to self preservation. Why do stories like this have to be twisted to seem racially motivated? 'Advanced Towards the Officer with a Knife in her Hand' aka 'Attacked Officer with Lethal Weapon' and this is somehow 'Racism'? We need to be more nuanced about this.

Jury rules N.B. police shooting death of Chantel Moore was a homicideThe five jurors at the inquest into the death of Chantel Moore have ruled that the Indigenous woman's death was a homicide. A tazer would not be effective? This expert is no expert I think to save lives and to prevent criminals the perfect middle ground would be for cops to just shoot the legs. If legs are injured what can anyone do. This would be proper protocol anything else is exesive.
