The adenovirus in the AstraZeneca vaccine is found in chimpanzees, altered to match the COVID-19 spike protein, which it carries into an individual’s immune system to provoke an immune response, without getting the individual too sick.

“Our data confirms PF4 can bind to adenoviruses, an important step in unravelling the mechanism underlying VITT. Establishing a mechanism could help to prevent and treat this disorder,” Alan Parker, a study researcher from Cardiff University’s School of Medicine, told the Guardian.
