ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The series of roundabouts to enter Galway are infamous in St. John’s — whether it’s about people driving in the wrong direction, yielding for no reason or almost getting sideswiped in the section where two lanes inexplicably merge into one, many who use them regularly have a story to tell.
A roundabout was not mentioned at that time, he said, but in 2023, the city told Dewcor a traffic-impact assessment was needed for the development to proceed. “At the end of the day, they're basically saying, ‘Sorry, the report that you generated as a result of our request, using the city’s terms of reference, is not acceptable,’” he said.
The cost of another roundabout in Galway would be about $3.6 million, while a signalized intersection would cost about $700,000, Williams said.The City of St. John’s said staff are still reviewing the traffic study pertaining to the intersection and “discussions are ongoing with the developer.” Ellsworth said the city is not holding up anything, and the developers are at a point in the development where they require infrastructure upgrades.“It’s no different than the discussions we had in 2016 around roundabout requirements,” Ellsworth told council.
