This book is not your typical memoir. Even Highway concedes it is a “shape-shifter book, residing in the place between fact and fiction, the fantastical place of memory and dream.” It is suffused with wonder and gratitude for all that is life. At one point in the book, the young Highway writes an essay for his eighth-grade English class where he states his aim to “prove to the world that, if any one source will save my people, it will be laughter. It will be the joy that anchors the Cree.
